The ideas of the project reach the South Estonians

On February 20, Snorre Karkkonen Svensson, a board member of the Language Museum Association, who is also the author of the idea of the project Exhibition on Latgalian and Nynorsk: cooperation and experience creating modern digital solutions and the concept and content of the Linguapolis exhibition, visited the University of Tartu, where he led an open lecture The Role of Democracy and Activism for Lesser Used Languages: Nynorsk and Latgalian in English.

Snorre talked about the situation of the written languages of Nynorsk and Latgalian. Similar to Latvia and Norway, Estonia also has two written traditions, and South Estonian language activists were interested in learning how activism in Latvia and Norway is used to popularize lesser-used written languages.

Snorre introduced the audience to the virtual exhibition Linguapolis, which we are creating together with the Norwegian Museum of Written Culture (Nynorsk kultursentrum) and the Latgalian culture movement “Volūda”, which will show the similarities and differences in the situation of the New Norwegian and Latgalian written languages.

Context: In 2021, in cooperation with the Latgalian cultural movement Volūda and the Nynorsk kultursentrum (Norway) the Language Museum Association started to implement the project “Exhibition on Latgalian and Nynorsk: cooperation and experience creating modern digital solutions”, which will result in the virtual exhibition Linguapolis about the Latgalian and Nynorsk in 2023. The implementation of the project is financed by the Fund for Bilateral Relations of the EEA and Norway grants 2014-2021.
