Opening of the digital exhibition Linguapolis

On February 2, the digital exhibition “Linguapolis” was launched as part of the language festival “Avots.” The event was introduced by Snorre Karkonen Svenson, a board member of the Language Museum association and one of the key authors behind the exhibition’s concept and content. He is also the initiator of the project “Exhibition on Latgalian and Nynorsk: Collaboration and Experience Creating Modern Digital Solutions.”
Snorre Karkkonen Svensson presented the project alongside representatives from partner organizations—Vineta Vilcāne-Toca from the association Volūda and Stine Aasen Lødemel from the Norwegian Museum of Written Culture. Both highlighted the significance of cross-linguistic collaboration and how learning from another language’s experience has been invaluable.
The digital exhibition is accessible online at www.linguapolis.lv and www.linguapolis.no.The Avots festival itself is a continuation of the project’s partnership, with its second day dedicated entirely to lesser-used languages. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the Võro, Livonian, and Finland Swedish languages through dedicated lectures. Additionally, the state and prospects of the New Norwegian language (nynorsk) were discussed in a presentation by Olav Øyehaug Opsvik, director of the Norwegian Museum of Written Culture, and a talk by Vineta Vilcāne-Toca.
Context: In 2021, in cooperation with the Latgalian cultural movement Volūda and the Nynorsk kultursentrum (Norway) the Language Museum Association started to implement the project “Exhibition on Latgalian and Nynorsk: cooperation and experience creating modern digital solutions”, which will result in the virtual exhibition Linguapolis about the Latgalian and Nynorsk in 2023. The implementation of the project is financed by the Fund for Bilateral Relations of the EEA and Norway grants 2014-2021.
