Latvian Language Courses for Adults in Riga
We offer A1 and A2 Latvian language courses for adults. Classes take place in person at our premises in Riga, in small groups, in a friendly environment, and under the guidance of experienced teachers.
Our goal is not simply to explain grammar rules. We help you hear, understand, and get a feel for the language and, most importantly, encourage and help you start using Latvian in everyday life from the very beginning.

Why Learn at House of Languages?
We use the language from the very first lesson
We teach words, phrases, and language structures that you need in real-life situations. You can start using what you have learned in everyday life after your very first lesson!
We learn through multiple senses
Our learning process combines sound, images, movement, text, conversation, and hands-on activities. This helps create stronger connections between new information and its practical use.
We create a friendly group environment
During the course, you will gain not only new language skills but also new connections and a sense of belonging. Our classes take place in small groups, giving everyone the opportunity to speak, work together, and get to know one another.
What Are the Classes Like?
Classes take place at our cosy premises at Avotu iela 33 in Riga. To accommodate different schedules, we offer both morning and evening courses.
Each lesson combines several ways of learning. Participants listen to Latvian, speak themselves, work in pairs and groups, use visual and tactile materials, role-play everyday situations, and reinforce what they have learned through practical activities.
The content of each lesson is structured, while the learning process itself is lively, active, and adapted to the needs of each particular group.
Choose Your Level
A1 – Your First Step in Latvian
The A1 course is suitable for you if you have no previous knowledge of Latvian or know only a little.
During the course, you will learn simple words, phrases, and sentences. You will learn how to introduce yourself, ask basic questions, and communicate in the most common everyday situations. At this level, you will build a solid foundation for further learning and already begin speaking some Latvian.
A2 – The Next Step Towards More Independent Communication
The A2 course is suitable for you if you have already learned the basics of Latvian and would like to expand your vocabulary, understand spoken Latvian better, and express yourself with greater confidence.
During the course, you will learn to talk in more detail about yourself and your everyday life, communicate in a variety of practical situations, and have longer conversations. We will also reinforce the most important grammatical structures and practise using them naturally in spoken language.
Our Teachers
The courses are taught by our Latvian language teachers. They are familiar with House of Languages’ teaching approach and focus not only on language-learning results but also on creating an environment where every participant can feel comfortable, confident, and involved.
Alise Birnbauma
Alise is a language teacher with more than 10 years of experience. She studied Norwegian at the Latvian Academy of Culture and holds a Master’s degree in Semiotics. She is currently continuing her studies in Education Sciences.
The focus of Alise’s classes is active language use. Students not only learn new vocabulary and grammar but also spend plenty of time speaking, thinking, and learning how to use the language in practical situations. Creating a friendly and safe environment is important to her – one where everyone feels comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing their language skills with confidence.
Ilze Andresone
Ilze studied philosophy and is currently completing the professional study programme “Teacher of Latvian as a Foreign Language for Adults” at the University of Latvia.
She has been teaching Latvian to non-native speakers since 2022, when what began as a hobby gradually became her profession. Ilze believes that learning Latvian grammar can be a fun adventure. Learning in general can be enjoyable – even when it is not easy.

Yes! The A1 course is also designed for people who are starting to learn Latvian completely from scratch.
How can I find out whether A1 or A2 is the right level for me?
Feel free to contact us! Before you enroll, we will help assess your current knowledge and choose the group that best suits your level.
Will I have to speak Latvian during the classes?
Yes, but we will start using the language gradually and according to each participant’s level. You do not need to wait until you can speak perfectly. Your teacher will help you understand, express yourself, and become more confident using Latvian.
How large are the groups?
Groups consist of 5 to 12 participants.
What happens if I cannot attend a class?
Whenever possible, you can join the class remotely via Zoom. If that is not possible, you will receive the learning materials and homework by email.
Will I receive a certificate after completing the course?
After completing the course, you will receive a certificate confirming that you have attended an A1 or A2 level Latvian language course.
Please note that this is a certificate of course attendance/completion, not an official certificate confirming that you have attained a particular Latvian language proficiency level. To obtain official certification of your Latvian language proficiency, you would need to pass the State Language Proficiency Examination.
